Engaging in meaningful daily activities in real contexts is what makes an intervention occupation-based. PAMs are tools like ultrasound, electrical stimulation, cryotherapy, or paraffin that influence tissue healing, pain, or edema. They don’t by themselves involve the client performing a purposeful occupation or task in a real-life context. Because of that, they’re considered preparatory or enabling methods that set the stage for occupation-based activity, rather than occupation-based interventions on their own.

So, while a PAM can be used within an occupation-based plan, the modality itself isn’t the occupation. For example, using heat to loosen tissues before practicing buttoning a shirt in a real situation is part of an occupation-based goal, but the heat application alone is not the occupation.
